About the song
"Lost!" is a famous track from the British band Coldplay.
The song was written by Jon Hopkins, Markus Dravs, Rik Simpson and Brian Eno.
Will Champion stated that they worked on the song even before they started recording the album "Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends", but it wasn't getting completed. He also stated that the inspiration for the drumbeat came from one of Justin Timberlake's songs, "Cry Me A River", which was a favorite for Champion. However, the first song that he used as an inspiration was "Sing", from Blurr's album "Leisure".
The idea came after they listened to the song while on concert in Detroit, Michigan.
The musical structure of the track features minimal handclaps, a church organ riff and a tribal drum-circle groove.
The end of the song also features a guitar solo. This mixture of "exotic" instruments was an attempt to present the audience with something new in their musical style, different from previous songs.
The music critics praised the musical work naming it "tabla-assisted gospel-hop", "a great organ-drive tune, alive with handclaps and foot-stomps" and a homage to the Canadian band Arcade Fire.
The band released various different versions of the song. This includes: "Lost?", a version which only features Chris Martin on vocals and it was the B-Side for "Violet Hill" and also a bonus track for the Japanese release on Amazon MP3 and iTunes Store for the album "Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends" and for the digital EP "Lost!".
Another version, "Lost+", was recorded along Jay Z and it was remastered in New York. They released it on October 16th, 2008 on BBC Radio 1.
They offered a performance of this version at the 2009 Grammy Awards. Jay Z's section was inspired by a freestyle which he performed at Funkmaster Flex's radio station Hot 97.
Another version is "Lost-", which consists in only the instrumental section, and lacks the vocals.
The music video was released on December 26th, 2008 and it features their live performance from Chicago, Illinois. It was directed by Matt Whitecross.
"Lost!" was number one on U.S. Billboard Triple A and also on the Venezuela Pop Rock chart. It reached number five in Israel and it was also present in Canada, Switzerland, Netherlands, Austria, Germany and also on Billboard Hot 100, U.S. Billboard Pop 100 and U.S. Billboard Hot Modern Rock Tracks.
