Coldplay is the name of a London alternative rock band initially started by lead singer Chris Martin and main guitarist Johnny Buckland.
They met at the University College London and decided to start a band. Their initial name was Pectoralz, but soon enough Guy Berryman was added and they switched to the name Starfish. The lineup has been completed by drummer Will Champion. Phil Harvey is their manager and is sometimes thought to be member number five.
The year 1998 brought their renaming to Coldplay.
That same year meant their first release, an EP titled "Safety". One year later, they followed through with the single "Brothers & Sisters". "The Blue Room" was released in 1999 as well, for the label Parlophone.
Their initial fame consisted of the "Yellow" single in 2000. That same year meant their debut studio album, titled "Parachutes". It got a nomination for the Mercury Prize. In 2002, Coldplay released another album, their second one. It got titled "A Rush of Blood to the Head" and received praises by the critics. It even managed to win several awards, one of them being Album of the Year by NME.
In 2005, they released the third album, called "X&Y". It was the best-seller from 2005 internationally. It was still viewed in good eyes, but some thought it wasn’t as good as "A Rush of Blood to the Head". Album number four got called "Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends" and got released in the year 2008.
Brian Eno was the producer and the album got many multiple nominations for Grammy awards, even a few wins.
The winter of 2011 meant another album for them, one called "Mylo Xyloto". The critics have had different opinions on it, but still mostly positive. Commercially, it worked well, since it reached the top of the charts in more than 34 countries. It was the best-selling rock recording from the UK in 2011.
The summer of 2014 brought over a new album for them, titled "Ghost Stories". This sixth album from Coldplay reached the top of the iTunes Store charts in more than 100 countries.
Coldplay have managed to win throughout their career many awards, such as a number of 8 Brit Awards, including Best British Group for three times.
Their music videos received five MTV Video Music Awards and, from a total of 25 nominations, they managed to win seven Grammy Awards.
