Always On My Mind free piano sheet music by Elvis Presley
About the song Always On My Mind
"Always on My Mind" was recorded on the 29th of March 1972 by the music legend Elvis Presley.
The song was recorded just a few weeks after the separation from his wife, Priscilla, in February the same year.
It was featured on the B-side "Separate Ways". It was certified as Gold level after the single was sold in over 1 million copies. In November 1972, the single reached the 16th position on the Billboard magazine's Hot Country Singles chart.
Elvis Presley's performance of the song performed quite well by an international point of view. On the Canadian RPM Country Tracks the song reached the 4th place.
"Always on My Mind" was not written or recorded for the first time by Elvis Presley. In fact, the composer is Johnny Christopher. It was he who first wrote it along with Mark James and Wayne Carson.
It was recorded at first by Gwen McCrae and Brenda Lee, and it was titled "You Were Always On My Mind" in the year 1972. Originally, the song is an American country music. Throughout time, the "Always on My Mind" song has been covered by lots of artists and performers in over 300 releases.
Although the original version reached only the 45th position in the United States country charts in the year 1972, other performances and releases of the song reached the top twenty. Such artists that reached the top twenty include Elvis Presley, John Wesley Ryles, Willie Nelson or the Pet Shop Boys.
Elvis's version was recorded in 1972, after he had recently broken up with his wife, Priscilla and that was an influential factor to the way the single was received by the public.
The recording was made between 4 and 7 a.m. and became Elvis Presley's comeback hit after 7 years of little success and once again claimed the title "the King". The song was widely appreciated by critics and soon became a hit (reaching 16 on Billboard magazine's Hot Country Singles chart in November, the same year). It was ten years later, in 1982 that "Always on My Mind" went to number one on the Billboard Charts and became a hit once again.
It won a Grammy Awards in 1983 for both Song of the Year and Best Country Song. As usual, Elvis turned this song into a huge hit. He was after all, the highest selling performer in all history with his 102 singles and 71 top hits in the United States alone.
His recording of "Always On My Mind" soon became
- number 20 on the US Billboard Hot 100;
- number 16 on the US Hot Country Singles (Billboard);
- number 3 on the US Adult Contemporary (Billboard);
- entered the Canadian RPM Country Tracks (no. 4);
- Dutch Top 40 (no. 17), French Singles Chart (no 56);
- Swiss Singles Chart 9 no. 39);
- UK Singles (Official Charts Company (no. 9).
Dwight Yoakam, Waylon Jennings, The Heptones and Candi Staton are just a few of the singers who covered the song, hoping to gain success but Presley's version remains the most appreciated one throughout the years (it was reputedly on the top 20 on European charts).
