He was born on July 22nd 1949 in New York City. Norman Menken, his father was a piano-playing dentist, while his mother, Judith Menken was an amazing actress and dancer. It looks like Alan Menken had an interest in music since he was very young. He started with piano and violin lessons, and shortly after he started to compose.
He attended New Rochelle High School in New Rochelle, New York and after graduation, he intended to become a rock star or a recording artist.
The biggest step in his career as a composer was emphatically the moment playwright Howard Ashman chose him and Engel to write the music for an adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut's novel "God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater". After that they did their next musical "Little Shop of Horrors" in 1986.
"The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz" was produced in Philadelphia, in 1897. It was an adaptation of Menken and lyricist David Spencer and it was based on the 1959 novel of the same name.
After the success of "Little Shop of Horrors", good news arrived. Menken and Howard Ashman got hired by Walt Disney Studios to write the music for "The Little Mermaid". They had to create an animated musical film that can be close of the Disney classics "Snow White" and "Cinderella". Their work was not in vain, they won their first Oscar for Best Song with "Under the Sea". But it was not all, because Menken also won an Oscar for Best Score in 1989. The sheet music of Alan Menken's song "Under the Sea" has a range from D4 to E5. Alan Menken's songs are usually easily adapted for piano, keyboard and guitar.
"Beauty and the Beast" was the result of another collaboration between Menken and Ashman which brought them three Oscar nominations for Best Song in 1991. The win was for its title song.
Ashman died, in 1991, while they were working on "Aladdin". In this sad situation, Menken decided to collaborate with Tim Rice to finish the songs for the film, which ended with a success, and in 1992 won an Oscar for Best Song: "A Whole New World". Menken also won the Oscar for Best Score.
Another collaboration of Menken was with Stephen Schwartz for "Pocahontas". With this one they have won two Oscars, one for Best Song and one for Best Musical or Comedy Score.
Menken joined David Zippel, once again, in 1997 for "Hercules", which was his last animated musical film in the series.
He also did the film scores for Home on the Range (2004), Enchanted (2007) and Tangled (2010).
As hard work is well appreciated, in 2012 Menken won for his musical adaptation of "Newsies" a Tony Award for Best Score.
