Alt-J is the name of a band from England that occupies itself with indie rock, folk rock, art rock and even electronica.
Their origins are in Leeds, in England and were formed in the year 2007.
The band members consist of guitarist and bassist Gwil Sainsbury, lead singer and guitarist Joe Newman, keyboard player Gus Unger-Hamilton and drummer Thom Green. They have worked for the labels Canvasback, Atlantic, Infectious, Loud and Quiet.
Their first album has been titled "An Awesome Wave" and was released in Europe in the month of May, year 2012. Later, in September, the album also became available in the United States. The album received the British Mercury Prize that year. Sainsbury left the band in 2014, but they continued without him. On the 22nd of September, 2014, they released a second studio album.
It has been called "This Is All Yours" and topped the UK charts since its debut. An occasional member for Alt-J has been Cameron Knight. Especially in live shows, Knight plays guitar and the sampler, as well as the bass.
The band was formed when the four initial members met each other, at the Leeds University. Newman was writing songs, which he showed to Sainsbury and they started off as a duo. Sainsbury was the producer and they were recording in the University, on GarageBand. The initial name of the band was "Daljit Dhaliwal", named after a TV guy from England.
After the members all graduated, they relocated to Cambridge. There, they spent 2 years playing more songs, finally getting a record deal with Infectious Records. They signed with the label in the month of December, year 2011. Their first EP was self-titled and contained four songs. Charlie Andrew produced the songs in London.
The songs on the EP were "Breezeblocks", "Matilda", "Hand-Made" and "Tessellate".
Their first album, "An Awesome Wave", was produced by Charlie Andrew. Its recording took place in Brixton. They started touring in United Kingdom, as well as in Ireland. In the summer of 2012, they went to many festivals, such as Latitude, Bestival, Tramlines, End Of The Road, Milhoes de Festa, Reading and Leeds, In The Woods Festival, Green Man, Lowlands, T in the Park, Pukkelpop, Into The Great Wide Open.
In 2013, they also played at the Bonnaroo, as well as the Optimus Alive!.
They even toured in New Zealand and Australia with the Laneway Festival. They also went to Lollapalooza, Sasquatch!, Coachella and many other festivals.
