Judy Garland, by her real name Frances Ethel Gumm, was born on June 10th, 1922 in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, US.

She unfortunately died June 22nd, 1969 in Chelsea, London, England.

She was an American singer and actress.

She was a singer between 1924 and 1969 and an actress between 1929 and 1967. She won a Grammy Award, a Special Tony Award, a Golden Globe Award and received a Juvenile Academy Award.

At the age of 39 she received the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievements as an actress. Garland was signed to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer as a teenager after appearing in vaudeville with her two older sisters. In 1938, she gave life to Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of Oz.

In the movie, she sang the song that she would be identified with forever, ''Over the rainbow''. For the role of Dorothy, studio chief Mayer wanted either Shirley Temple from 20th Century Fox (but they refused) or Deanna Durbin. The latter was unavailable, concluding with the cast of Garland whom producers Arthur Freed and Mervyn Le Roy wanted from the beginning.

She starred in three films: Andy Hardy Meets Debutante, Strike Up the Band, and Little Nellie Kelly in 1940.

Judy Garland starred in Meet Me in St. Louis, in 1944, which was one of the most successful films for MGM.

In 1945, Garland starred in The Clock, a dramatic film in which fans expected her to sing. Other films in which Garland starred in the 1940s were Till the Clouds Roll By (1946) and The Harvey Girls (1946) in which she introduces the song On the Atchinson, Topeka.

Garland played to sold-out audiences in Ireland, England and Scotland, in 1951 a four-month concert. Garland`s performances were focused around songs by Al Jolson and she gave tributes to him at the Palace Theater in New York and at the London Palladium.

Several of Judy Garland`s recordings were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Her legacy as a singer and actress has endured long after her death.

She was name the eighth among the Greatest Female Stars of All Time by the American Film Institute.
