About George Gershwin

George Gershwin, by his real name Jacob Gershwin, was an American pianist and musical composer.

He was born in September 26th, 1898 in Brooklyn, New York, U.S. and died in July 11th, 1937 in Los Angeles, California, U.S. The genres of his compositions are both classical and popular. Gershwin`s inspiration was from French composers.

Maurice Ravel was impressed by his abilities. Apart from the French influence, Gershwin was fascinated by Igor Stravinsky, Arnold Schoenberg, Alban Berg, Darius Milhaud and Dmitri Shostakovich.

 He is better known for his orchestral compositions Rhapsody in Blue (1924) and An American in Paris (1928).

George Gershwin started his career composing Broadway theater works with Buddy DeSylva and his brother, Ira Gershwin. He also orchestrated opera, his most famous composition is Porgy and Bess (1935). This composition is based on the novel Porgy written by DuBose Heyward. Porgy and Bess contains Gershwin`s exceptional music as well as a passacaglia, a fugue using polyrhythmic, tone row, atonality and polytonality.

George Gershwin recorded over one hundred piano rolls, player piano. Most of them were popular music of those years and a few were actually his. His roll recording career was redundant once his musical theater writing income became considerable.

In 1998, Nonesuch Records, issued two audio CD`s featuring piano rolls recorded the artist, entitled Gershwin Plays Gershwin: The Piano Rolls. Among the many musicians and singers that have recorded Gershwin's songs are: Diana Ross, Barbara Streisand, Sting, Louis Armstrong, Fred Astaire, Madonna and several others.

George Gershwin was awarded The Congressional Gold Medal in 1985, also a special Pulitzer Prize for his contributions to the American music in 1998.

Gershwin composed various film scores until his death in 1937. The Library of Congress named their Prize for Popular Song after George and Ira Gershwin, in 2007. The prize is given every year to a composer or performer that added a lifetime of contributions exemplifying the excellence associated with the Gershwin’s. The first Gershwin Prize was awarded to Paul Simon on March 1st, 2007.

George Gershwin served as an inspiration for many generations to come.
