About George Benson

George Benson was born on March 22nd, 1943 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the United States.

He is a famous singer and songwriter who has approached musical genres like rhythm and blues, soul, jazz and funk. He can sing and also play guitar and archtop guitar.

Throughout his long career, Benson released songs through many labels like Prestige Records, from 1964 until 1965, Columbia Records, from 1966 until 1967, Verve records, in 1968, A&M Records, through 1968 until 1970, CTI Records, from 1971 to 1976, Warner Bros. Records, between 1976 and 1994, GRP Records, from 1995 until 2005 and Concord Records, from 2006 up to this day.

George Benson recorded his first song, "She Makes Me Mad" at the age of 10 and by age 21, he had already recorded his first album, "The New Boss Guitar". After that came the recording "It's Uptown With The George Benson Quartet" and "The George Benson Cookbook".

He recorded many albums with CTI, including "Bad Benson", "Good King Bad".

After that, he recorded a cover of "Abbey Road", from The Beatles and named it "The Other Side Of Abbey Road". He also covered "White Rabbit", from Jefferson Airplane.

In 1976, he released "Breezin" and "The Masquerade", a song that won the Grammy Award for "Record Of The Year". "Breezin" stood as the first jazz album to be certified platinum. "Give Me The Night", his breakthrough album, was produced by the legendary Quincy Jones.

The title song reached top ten in the R&B charts. In the following period, he had another three EPs to be certified platinum and two albums that were certified gold. He went back to his original sourse of inspiration: Ray Charles, Nat Cole and Donny Hatthaway.

Benson received many Grammy Awards throughout his career, the most recent one being in 2007 for "Best Pop Instrumental Performance", with "Mornin". He also won the Grammys for Best R&B Instrumental Performance, in 1977 with "Theme From Good King Bad", Best Jazz Vocal Performance, with "Moody's Mood", in 1981, Record of The Year, in 1977, with "The Masquerade", Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, in 1981 with "Give Me The Night", Best Traditional R&B Performance, in 2007 for "God Bless The Child", Best R&B Instrumental Performance with "Off Broadway", Best Pop Instrumental Performance with "Being With You", Best Male R&B Vocal Performance with "On Broadway".

A legend of R&B, soul and jazz, George Benson still delights the public, decades since his first song.
