"Stairway To Heaven" is a song from the English band Led Zeppelin.
It was part of the album "Led Zeppelin IV" and it was initially released along with it, on November 8th, 1971 and as a single in 1972.
The song was written by Robert Plant and Jimmy Page and produced by the later. The band started recording it in December 1970 at the Island Records from London and it took one year. The song features hard rock and folk rock and it has a long duration of 8:02 minutes.
"Stairway To Heaven" was written in A minor and features an opening guitar arpeggio which resembles the 1968 instrumental "Taurus" from the band Spirit. This can be a cause of Led Zeppelin serving as an opening act on various concerts for Spirit.
The single has been performed live at Belfast's "Ulster Hall" for the first time. After the initial performance from March 5th, 1971, the band also sang it at various concert. This version would go up to having a duration of 10 minutes.
The radio premiere took place on April 1st, 1971 at the Paris Cinema. On the live version of the track the band often adds lyrics such as "Does Anybody Remember Forests?", "Does Anybody Remember Laughter" and "And I Think You Can See That".
The song was also performed at the band's reunion at the O2 Arena, from 2007. For this occasion they used a slower version. "Stairway To Heaven" has topped various radio lists as the greatest rock song and has often been cited as one of the greatest of all time. It was number 3 on VH1's list, number one on Guitar World's list, number 53 in RIAA's list of "Songs Of The Century", number 31 on Rolling Stone's list of "The 500 Greatest Songs Of All Time", number 8 on "Q"'s list of "100 Songs That Changed The world", number 10 on Triple J's list of "Hottest 100 Of All Time" and also appears in various other important top lists.
"Stairway To Heaven" was the most requested song on the radio stations in the 1970's, despite never being released as a single in the United States. It received the Grammy Hall Of Fame Awards at the Grammy Awards and it was included on Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame's "The Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame 500 Songs That Shaped Rock And Roll" list.
