About Bon Iver
Bon Iver was formed in 2007 and it's an American indie folk band. The name comes from the French "bon hiver", which means "good winter". It consists of Justin Vernon, Michael Noyce, Sean Carey, Matthew McCaughan, C.J. Camerieri, Colin Stetson, Reginald Pace, Greg Leisz, Rob Moose
and Michael Lewis. However, Justin Vernon had released their first album, "For Emma, Forever Ago", independently, through "Jagjaguwar". It received five stars out of five and mainly positive reviews from music critics. The album was ranked at 29 on the list of "The Top 200 Albums of 2000s", made by Pitchfork Media. After its success, the artist commented: "I'm really humbled by everything and am keeping things in perspective".
Various tracks from the album gained popularity and featured in television projects, such as "The Street", "One Tree Hill", "Grey's Anatomy", "Silent Hill" and "House MD". Vernon has since collaborated with famous artists including St. Vincent, Kanye West and many others.
The band's next album was released on June 17th, 2011 and it was titled "Bon Iver, Bon Iver". It consisted of ten new tracks and a change in the musical style. According to Vernon: "I brought in a lot of people to change my voice — not my singing voice, but my role as the author of this band, this project". The album has been called "ambitious musical departure" from "For Emma, Forever Ago" and the tracks received various descriptions, such as "horn heavy", "Civil War-sounding heavy metal song" or "finger-picked guitars, double bass drums and distorted bass saxophone". While on tour, in Dublin, the band announced that they will take a break "after two very busy years on this record".
The album received mainly positive reviews from music critics, who stated that it "retains the beautiful melancholy of For Emma, but in nearly every way, it’s just more. More layered, more diverse, more interesting. He brings in collaborators to do what they do best, but never at the expense of his sound and vision. It treads into new sonic directions without getting lost."."Bon Iver, Bon Iver" won the band a Grammy award for "Best Alternative Album", as well as did Justin Vernon for "Best New Artist". The group had received four nominations. It was also named the album of the year by Pitchfork.com.
Bon Iver offered many live performances throughout the years. The list includes the ones at the Austin City Limits Music Festival, Bonnaroo, Coachella, Way Out West, Sasquatch! and many others.
