About Christmas

"Christmas" is the most important day in the Christian culture and it stands for the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. It is mainly commemorated on December 25th by all the Christians around the world and also by a big number of non-Christian persons. As a very important day in the religious calendar, Christmas is a public holiday throughout all the world's nations.

The birth of Jesus Christ is regarded as the fulfillment of the "Old Testament’s prophecy which mentions the birth of the Messiah in a stable. The celebration leads to the increasement of Christians’ attendance in religions institutions. The traditions of the Christmas decorations dates back from the 15th century, when in London, all the houses and churches had to be "decked with holm, ivy, bays, and whatsoever the season of the year afforded to be green".

The classical colors for the decorations have been green, which stands for eternity and the evergreen tree, red, which stands for the blood of Jesus Christ, and gold, which is an association to the Magi's gift, that was offered to the Messiah. The Christmas tree is thought to be of pagan origins, from back when mankind used to worship trees. However, the tree's tradition origins back from the 18th century Germany. Afterwards, the custom became widespread and by the 19th century, the Christmas tree was already being decorated with colored ornaments and lights. The classical decoration go beyond and include many other ornaments, such as candles, wreath, stocking, angels, candy canes and even bells. The candles symbolize the fact that Jesus Christ is the light of the entire world.

All the ornaments are present not just in people's homes, but also around the streets where they are hung up or placed in visible places.

The holiday's tradition doesn't resume only to the ornaments. It includes various customs, depending on the region. An important aspect of Christmas is represented by the music and carols. The carols date back from centuries ago when they were just communal folk songs. One of the most popular songs that are often used during this period is "Silent Night". It was composed by Mohr and Gruber, in 1818.

The Christmas traditions have expended, throughout the time, to the cuisine as well. The various types of food differ depending on the country and culture.
Despite all the customs and traditions that came along the celebration throughout the years, Christmas is nonetheless a symbol of joy, warmth and a reason for people to come together, reconnect with families and enjoy the old peaceful spirit of the holiday.
