Their breakthrough came with the debut album "Appetite for Destruction" which was released on July 21, 1987. The original cover design was considered too controversial and it underwent a change by Bill White, a tattoo artist. The first single was "Welcome To The Jungle" and also featured a music video.
The song was written in Seattle, while the music video was filmed in New York. It was also used in the 1988 movie "The Dead Pool", starring Clint Eastwood and the band members had a cameo appearance. The second single was "Sweet Child o’Mine" and it received heavy airplay on radio and MTV. It topped the charts in the Summer of 1988 and became a major success. The album reached number 1 on "Billboard 200" by the time the next single, "Paradise City" was launched. It is also the best-selling debut album in history of the US, having sold by this day an enormous 28 million copies worldwide.
The band made a 16 months tour to promote their album, in Europe and the United States. Aerosmith’s then-manager, Tim Collins, stated:
"By the end of the tour, Guns N’ Roses were huge. They basically just exploded. We were all pissed that Rolling Stone showed up to do a story on Aerosmith, but Guns N’ Roses ended up on the cover of the magazine. Suddenly, the opening act was bigger than we were."
