About Francis Cabrel

Francis Cabrel is the name of a French folk, blues and pop singer / songwriter.

Also playing the guitar, Cabrel’s main genre is the folk one, having released many albums pertaining to this genre.

Yet, he also occupied himself with other styles, such as pop, blues and even country. Several of his songs have remained throughout history as French masterpieces, we can remember three of them: "La corrida", "Petite Marie" and "L'encre de tes yeux".

Francis Cabrel has been born on the 23rd of November, year 1953 in a commune from France called Astaffort.

Many of his songs have been covered successfully by various artists. We can remember the Canadian version of "C’etait l’hiver" by Isabelle Boulay and "Je l'aime à mourir" by Shakira and other Spanish singers.

He stated that his inspiration to get into music has been the song "Like a Rolling Stone" by Bob Dylan.

This song made him want to learn how to play the guitar and write songs. At the age of only sixteen, he was already playing songs by the likes of Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan or Neil Young. In the process of writing music, he also learned English, since he worked on lyrics as well.

Cabrel joined a musical group called "Ray Frank and the Jazzmen", with which he started playing local concerts. The group got renamed to "les Gaulois" and Cabrel himself started dressing himself as a hippie. The year 1974 has Cabrel attending a contest by Sud Radio, where he performed his own song titled "Petite Marie".

The song, being written for Mariette, his wife, managed to win the contest. Soon enough, due to this success, he got signed to the CBS label.

His first release has been "Ma ville" for the CBS label. Known for French songs mostly, he has also worked on Spanish songs and even collaborated with Rose Laurens in 1986. The year 1989 meant an album for Cabrel. It was called "Sarbacane" and was a great hit, selling almost 2 million copies.

The album spawned charting singles "Sarbacane" and "C’est ecrit". After a tour in Paris, he occupied himself with charity organisations.

Switching over to Columbia Records, Francis Cabrel released a number of four albums for the label. In 1994, he released "Samedi soir sur la terre", followed by "Hors-saison" in 1999.

Another five years passed and he released "Les beaux degats". In 2008, the album "Des roses et des orties" got out. His 2012 album was called "Vise le ciel". In 2015, he released a new single, called "Octobre".
