About Kansas

Kansas is the name of an American rock band popular in the 1970s that charted with hit singles "Carry On Wayward Son" or "Dust in the Wind", producing eight gold albums, three sextuple-Platinum albums, that toured intensively in America, Europe and Japan. "Carry On Wayward Son" was the second most Played Track on classic rock radio in 1995, becoming top of that chart in 1997. Composed of Dave Hope at bass, Phil Ehart at drums and percussion and Kerry Livgren on guitars, keyboards and synthesizers, they were formed in 1970 in Kansas, adding vocalists Lynn Meredith and Joel Warne, keyboardists Don Montre and Dan Wright, and saxophonist Larry Baker. Kansas released a self-titled album in March 1974, defining the band’s boogie rock style, with symphonic arrangements and a heartland rock violin sound, touring to promote the album, as they did for the next two albums, "Song for America" and "Masque". With the release of the fourth album titled "Overture" in October 1976, they produced the hit single "Carry On Wayward Son" and the follow-up titled "Point of Know Return" in 1977 produced "Dust in the Wind".

Becoming a headlining act, Kansas received more and more fame and sold out with their concerts, releasing a double live album titled "Two for the Show" in 1978. "Monolith" in 1979 was the album that produced the Top 40 single "People of the South Wind". The original lineup released another album in 1980 titled "Audio-Visions", inspired by Christianity. Walsh got replaced by John Elefante and released "Vinyl Confessions" in June 1982, getting a new Top 20 hit titled "Play the Game Tonight".

"Drastic Measures" was Kansas’ 1983 album, where single "Fight Fire with Fire" was the only thing that got popular. Livgren and Hope left the band soon after though and "Perfect Lover" was released by the remainder band members, which appeared on the 1984 "The Best of Kansas". The band began to reform in 1985 when Walsh returned, bassist Billy Greer and guitarist Steve Morse joined and they released "Power" in November 1986, with "All I Wanted" becoming a Billboard Top 40 hit.

"In the Spirit of Things" got released in 1988 and in 1991 violonist David Ragsdale joined and the lineup formed into Ehart, Greer, Ragsdale, Robert, Walsh, and Williams, lasting from 1991 to 1997. In 1998, with the return of Steinhardt, they released "Always Never the Same", a mix of older content with new material. Continuing to tour since 2006, Kansas was forced  forced to have Ronnie Platt as the new lead vocalist, with the retirement of Steve Walsh.
