"Gorilla" is a rock song from the American singer Bruno Mars.
It was the fourth single to be released from the artist's album "Unorthodox Jukebox".
The midtempo rock song has been the subject of controversy because of its explicit lyrics.
The musical style is very similar to those from the 1980's and a direct link to Prince's "Purple Rain", which served as an inspiration for the main theme of the lyrics.
Mars offers an exceptional vocal performance, going from C5 from A5 and performing many high-range falsettos.
It was written by the singer, Ari Levine and Philip Lawrence
The production was assured by Mark Ronson, The Smeezingtons, Emile Haynie and Jeff Bhasker.
"Gorilla" has a duration of 4:05 minutes and it is part of the "Atlantic" label. The rock song was released for digital download on September 10th, 2013.
Bruno Mars offered a live performance of the single during the MTV Video Music Awards ceremony, in 2013.
The ambiance was similar to the one in the music video and it featured Nicole Williams.
He also performed the song at the MTV Europe Music Awards, where he offered a similar picture.
Critics have described it as "elegant" and praised on the singer's vocal performance which was at its "top form".
The music video for "Gorilla" was directed by Cameron Duddy along with Bruno Mars. Duddy stated that the production required much research as they needed to make the locations look as realistic as possible.
On October 11th, 2011, a teaser of the video was released by the singer to promote the future launching.
It was first issued on Mars' Facebook account, where more than half a million people 'liked' it, in just one day. It had more than one million views in one hour, as it was later stated by Glasswerk magazine. It has a duration of six minutes and it's considered the artist's first short film.
"Gorilla" received mixed reviews from the music critics whom described it as "ambitious" similar to Prince's "Purple Rain".
The single sold almost a million copies in the United States alone, where it was certified gold. It also received the gold certification in Australia and Canada.
It reached number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100, number 11 on the Mainstream Top 40 chart and number 9 on the US Rhythmic chart. It was also present in many other charts throughout the world.
An official remix of the song has been issued and it features R. Kelly and Pharrell Williams.
